In March 1954, a few people in the city of Bellingham in Washington state noticed that their car windshields were damaged with small pits and chips. Police were notified, and they suspected local youths were probably responsible.
But this hypothesis bumped up against the reality of the situation. For one thing, after newspapers reported the damage, it started to spread quickly to the nearby communities of Sedro-Woolley and Mount Vernon. Not long after that, the island town of Anacortes was hit as well. Police set up roadblocks and started to search cars for the sort of low-grade weaponry that could have caused the chips. Despite this, the damage spread even further, and to a much more sensitive and secure location. The Whidbey Island Naval Air Station was hit, which resulted in dozens of marines performing a detailed inspection of the base to find the culprits, to no avail.
How was it possible that local vandals were able to move that quickly and effectively, even into high-security areas? There was no way it could simply be the work of some lone-wolf hooligan—at the speed at which the damage was spreading, it would have to be an organized group secretly working together. In other words, if it was deliberately caused by the actions of people, it would have to be the result of a conspiracy. As one sheriff’s deputy told a reporter, “This thing is far more than ordinary juvenile delinquency . . . it’s a getting of revenge on society.”
As the damage spread even further from Bellingham, other possibilities were considered. In areas where the incidents were more frequent, people noticed the presence of tiny, metallic-looking particles on the glass. Others found a strange ash-like substance clinging to the surface of the damaged windshields. Some suspected there had been sand flea eggs in the material used to create the glass in the windshields, based on reports of drivers seeing specks that hatched before their eyes, causing the chip to happen as they watched.
There were even wilder hypotheses. Cosmic rays from space were blamed, as was a shift in Earth’s magnetic field. Aliens were suspected—maybe it was residue from a passing flying saucer? Were tiny meteorites the culprits? Could it be that the air was filled with acid?
Eventually, one hypothesis started to get some traction. It was one of the most alarming ones—that the pits and chips in the windshields were an unforeseen consequence of the Castle Bravo hydrogen bomb test that had recently taken place at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. By the time the windshield-pitting epidemic had run its course, about 30 percent of people polled believed this was the reason behind the phenomenon.
That wasn’t surprising—the test had been widely discussed in newspapers. The explosion was far larger than anticipated by the scientists who had created it—the largest explosion ever caused by humans. To a population for whom the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki less than a decade earlier was still fresh in mind, this new weapon was understandably awe inspiring and terrifying. If the physicists had badly miscalculated the size of the explosion, what else might they have gotten wrong?
Whatever was causing the phenomenon, it was clear there was a pattern—it was heading straight for Seattle. On the evening of April 15, four chips were reported in the city. By the time the sun set the next day, there were over 3,000 reports, and the populace was alarmed.
Drivers reported watching the chips appear as if by magic as they drove. Police officers, dispatched to investigate, found chips in their own windshields as they reported to the scene. People were covering their cars in paper and cardboard, but to no avail. The pitting and chipping continued to spread. Facing a troubled and frightened city, Seattle mayor Allan Pomeroy sent a wire message to the White House and the governor of Washington.
Governor Arthur Langlie contacted the University of Washington, which assembled a team of researchers to investigate. They ran experiments on glass, tried to replicate the chips using acid and resin, analyzed the pebbles and dust that people had sent in, and tested for radioactivity. The conclusion: none of the hypotheses that had been proposed was supported by evidence. The pits and chips were caused by the usual wear and tear that you would expect to see on any car.
Other researchers, at the University of British Columbia, came to the same conclusion, stating that “. . . mass hysteria is playing a big part in all these rumours. . . . This is the time of year when dust, sand and bits of gravel begin to be thrown at cars from the car ahead. These particles naturally scratch windshields to some extent.” The more miles on a car, the more likely it was to have pits and chips. Car lots with both new and used cars were used as field laboratories, and it turned out that the used cars had chips, and the new cars (which hadn’t been driven on roads yet) didn’t. The substance coating windshields was just the same coal dust that had been coating windshields for decades.
There was an explanation for why it seemed as though the pits and chips were showing up all of a sudden: when people heard about the phenomenon, they looked at their windshields instead of through them and noticed all sorts of things that had been there all along as if they had just appeared.
It’s often asked, “What sort of people believe in conspiracy theories?” And the answer is: people. Partly, this is because there are some genuine conspiracies. Every time we learn about a true conspiracy, the rest become more plausible. Actual government activities, such as the 2003 invasion of Iraq under the false pretence of weapons of mass destruction, contribute to an understandable belief that some people in power are secretly manipulating and concealing things for sinister reasons.
But it is vital to ensure that healthy skepticism doesn’t tip over into unhealthy paranoia. Take the example of the Seattle Windshield Epidemic. Because we tend to notice things better when we’re looking for them, and we aren’t as good as we think at perceiving the world around us, it appeared to many as if the chips suddenly showed up at the same time in an unusual manner. The desire to see sinister and deliberate agents behind problems and hardships contributed to the belief that punks, aliens, or communists must have been responsible. The panic emerged organically and wasn’t deliberately encouraged or weaponized by any particular group, but the event does show us how easy it would be to pull off if someone did want to manipulate a population into fear.
Our situation has become more complicated in the last few generations. Our worlds are no longer confined to our immediate surroundings, as the digital networks and devices we’ve created have allowed us to receive new data constantly and from everywhere. Where we were once in a desert of information, now we’re in an ocean. One of the skills that humans use to organize and understand information is the ability to recognize patterns and then discern meaning behind them. This skill allows them to see past the surface level of things and into secret intentions and hidden purposes.
The problem is, we’re not only good at recognizing real hidden plots lurking behind the scenes; we’re also good at inventing plots where none exist. Organizations with an interest in manipulating populations have long recognized this tendency and have weaponized false conspiracy theories to spread through groups of people to change what they think and, in doing so, change how they act and, ultimately, who they are.
So, then, what are we to do? We have a responsibility to make ourselves as difficult to manipulate as possible, to prevent ourselves from being talked into believing absurdities and possibly committing atrocities grounded in those absurdities. At the same time, there are genuine conspiracies that surround us, which need to be exposed.
When we understand the psychological factors that make us more likely to be fooled, we are more on guard against being fooled. When we grasp the sociological influences that impact our belief systems, we can recognize more readily when we are getting swept up in a mass panic, organized disinformation campaign, or false belief system. Understanding the operations of the media ecosystem (and the information, misinformation, and disinformation organisms that inhabit it) allows us to move through it in a more critical and aware manner. But protecting ourselves from ridiculousness is only one part of the conspiracy story, since we’re impacted not just by our own beliefs but by the beliefs of those around us.
Increasingly, people are confronting an uncomfortable reality—it is all too easy for loved ones to become seduced by false conspiracy theories and fall headlong down a rabbit hole into these beliefs. Because of the way social media algorithms work, a brief exploration down a mild conspiratorial avenue can quickly lead to an immersion in far more radical, unsupported, and dangerous beliefs.
What can be done to interrupt this pattern in the early stages, or to bring someone back once they have already been dragged down by the undertow of absurdity? According to one 2013 study, successful conspiracy peddlers often try to immunize their followers against being talked out of their beliefs by warning them that such efforts will likely be made and by preparing their followers with counterarguments.
Similar mechanisms are employed by charismatic cult leaders. Like cults, conspiracy peddlers will present themselves as the only true and reliable source of knowledge. Like cults, conspiracy belief systems come with a ready-made community of like-minded believers, and the appeal of a community to an isolated or lonely person is a siren call. That community of conspiracy believers itself is a protective mechanism, as people tend to share the beliefs of those around them and reinforce those beliefs for each other.
Even when the beliefs are demonstrably false, or the conspiracy predictions fail, there are ways for believers to minimize their cognitive dissonance and maintain their beliefs. Conspiracy theories are difficult belief systems to change. By understanding what makes a person—any person—susceptible to conspiracism, we can perhaps interrupt the dangerous descents that paranoid spokespeople try to drag us down into.
There is one cognitive and social factor vital for our understanding.
In 2023, then US surgeon general Vivek Murthy wrote an open letter in which he described a scourge that was threatening the health outcomes of Americans. This epidemic wasn’t a virus. It was loneliness.
Statistics show that North Americans spend more time alone in the 2020s than they did in the 2000s, with a difference of about one day’s worth of time per month. People also report having fewer friends now than they did only two decades ago. There are likely several reasons for this phenomenon, including larger historical trends, the shifting nature of the workplace, the effects of years of COVID-19 lockdowns, and our rapidly changing relationship with information technologies.
Loneliness has a dramatic impact on mortality rates and quality of life. According to the report, loneliness increased the risk of premature death by 26 percent, heart disease by 29 percent, and stroke by 32 percent. In addition to the impact loneliness has on an individual, there are shared risks to a society in which loneliness is common. Trust in institutions and in fellow humans, which is eroded by conspiracism, both affects and is affected by social isolation. When we don’t trust the people around us, we become more isolated. When we become more isolated, we trust the people around us less. When we are more isolated and less trusting, we are more prone to being convinced by conspiracism.
It gives us a reason to explain our loneliness in a way that protects our ego, by giving us a villain to blame for our situation. It can even make our loneliness seem heroic, as we bravely face a truth that the masses refuse to see. Compounding this, when we are isolated, we receive less corrective feedback from our peers when we start to embrace flawed or hazardous beliefs. Without other people around to provide reality checks and other perspectives, we lose valuable input on our beliefs.
To protect ourselves as individuals and our society as a whole from the manipulative threat of conspiracism and paranoia, we need more than just intellectual solutions. There is a very important emotional component.
We don’t hold beliefs just because we have been convinced by arguments. We hold them because they serve an important emotional, or even spiritual, need. When we encounter someone who holds a ridiculous and untrue belief, particularly when it is someone we care about, we need to look past the absurd text of the claim itself to the social and personal context of the person who holds it, to understand the subtext of why they are committed to it. Finding areas of agreement is vital in a situation such as this.
Criticizing or mocking a person and attacking a belief that (while false and potentially dangerous) is performing an important psychological function will most likely cause that person to dig in their heels and protect that belief. On the other hand, trying to understand the reasons why the person has embraced that belief is more likely to result in a conversation rather than a confrontation. It is through conversation that we can bridge the distances between us, reduce isolation, and decrease the feelings of loneliness that can drive us into the arms of paranoia.
